Here are just some of the things we are involved in:

• Churches Together There is an active ‘Churches Together’ in the Peninsula for all denominations including the Church of England, Roman Catholic, Methodist, Salvation Army, United Reformed Church, Evangelical Church and the Society of Friends. We share Lent and Advent courses/services, Christian Aid, Prayer for Christian Unity and One World Week services, Epiphany parties, &c.  Churches Together also help at the office for the Mission to Seafarers at Harwich International Port when cruise ships are alongside.  They help crew members, who are often away from home for long periods, with phoning home and any other needs they may have.  The local congregations also help by knitting hats for the crew members.

• The Mothers’ Union has world-wide membership.  It is especially concerned with all that strengthens and preserves marriage and Christian family life.

Its aims and objectives are:

MU members are involved with:

prison visiting and supporting prisoners’ families; and

contact centres -  where children, under the terms of the Children’s’ Act, have the right of contact with a non resident parent, rather than the parent having the right of access to the child.

The only criterion for membership of the MU is that you have been baptised.

There are two branches of the Mothers Union in the parish:

the All Saints’ Mothers Union meets on the second Wednesday of the month (except in August) in All Saints’ Church Family Room at 2.30pm; the St Nicholas’ Mothers Union meets

on the first Wednesday of month 2.15pm.

• The Children’s Society was founded by Edward Rudolf in 1881, primarily to house the “waifs and strays” in London.

Of course, things have moved on from then, and the commitment of The Children’s Society nowadays is among other aims, to help young people who become homeless, assist deprived or isolated communities and protect children’s rights in the Public Care System.

Many people who wish to support the Society with this work do so by having a small collection box at home, and putting aside a fixed sum each week, e.g. 20 pence per week raises £10 in a year; others put in their small change - it’s surprising how those

5p’s add up!

This Parish supports The Society with many parishioners taking part in this scheme, and anyone who would like to know more, or have a Box at home should initially contact Janet Elliott on 01255 503020.
